Cardio & Weights

Question: Combining cardio and weights... I want to lose some weight and I was wondering, if it was possible, especially considering I'm still a beginner, to gain muscle mass and lose the weight at the same time.
My trainer said it's not possible, because you need to ingest more calories than you burn in order to ever gain muscle mass. However, I read an article by an MD saying that protein is primarily used for muscle mass in this situation, and only after that is it broken down for energy.
So I thought of a routine:
Monday - Cardio + Chest
Tuesday - Cardio(HIIT) + Biceps
Wednesday - Cardio + Back
Thursday - Cardio(HIIT) + Triceps
Friday - Cardio + Shoulders
Sunday - Cardio(HIIT)
I don't think I need to work on my legs with heavy weights because I'm doing HIIT on the stationary bike(and it feels far more intense than any weight exercises I've done).
